Choose one point of emphasis

If you want to wear a distinctive jacket, place it with two different lower garments first. Quiet trousers let its shape stand out, while a patterned skirt creates a deliberately busier combination. Either may work. Decide from the complete view rather than a general rule about the number of permitted colours.

A piece of jewellery or a particular bag can also provide the emphasis. You do not then need a new top as well. Hold accessories in their normal wearing position against the clothes. A bag looks different over a shoulder from how it looks on a table beside the outfit.

Standing, talking and holding things

Imagine holding a glass and a small brochure. Is one hand free, or do you need a bag you do not have to hold constantly? Its strap should stay on the chosen jacket. Very wide sleeves may get in the way when reaching for objects; test them in motion.

Shoes should be familiar over the expected standing time. If you normally want to sit after twenty minutes, a different colour combination will not solve that problem. Choose a comfortable pair first and fit the trousers or skirt around it.

Make the outer layer part of the evening

Some spaces have a cloakroom and others do not. A jacket you can easily carry over an arm is simpler under uncertain conditions than a heavy coat. You still need a layer suitable for the actual temperature on the journey home.

If you arrive straight from work, the same base can continue into the evening. A change is needed only if you want one or the venue requires it. Check the combination without the work jacket and with the evening bag before packing extra pieces. This keeps the selection personal without beginning the evening with unnecessary luggage.

Actually wear the unusual piece

If a garment has mainly waited in the wardrobe for a special occasion, try it on an ordinary short outing beforehand. You will notice whether a fastening presses or a bag catches on an unusual sleeve construction. The opening need not be the first opportunity to discover those qualities.

Combine a distinctive piece with familiar clothes rather than repeating its unusual character everywhere. A textured jacket over a known T-shirt and suitable trousers is easier to assess than three unfamiliar pieces together. Personal expression can come from which existing pieces you deliberately place alongside one another.
