Do not discover the ground only on arrival

A narrow heel may behave differently on soft ground from how it does on a firm terrace. Choose a pair you can wear steadily on the intended surface. Check the garment length with it: trousers or a dress should not rely on a higher shoe to clear the ground if you intend to change into flats later.

With a long skirt, try walking while one hand holds a bag or glass. If you need to hold the hem constantly, little freedom of movement remains. Another length may be simpler for this occasion without being less appropriate to the setting.

Include wind and seating

A very light skirt or open shirt moves more outdoors than in a bedroom. Check whether you are happy with that movement. A layer underneath or another way of fastening it may help, but should not become uncomfortable. For a seated celebration, try the fabric on an ordinary chair rather than only a soft sofa.

If the evening becomes cooler, the extra layer should work with the whole combination. An existing cardigan may be enough. Try it with the sleeves of the top so nothing bunches or rides upward.

Let the bag serve a purpose

For a garden visit, you may need sunglasses, keys, a phone and a small extra layer. Choose the bag for those contents. A delicate base may be awkward on a terrace or lawn; consider where you can put it down.

Follow specific wishes stated in the invitation. Without such guidance, the combination can come from existing clothes. A patterned dress, pale trousers or a plain skirt are possible starting points. What matters is whether the complete outfit suits the place and the planned time there.

Trousers as another option

Loosely falling fabric trousers with a simple top can suit a garden celebration as well as a dress. Choose the length for the intended shoes and test sitting on an ordinary garden chair. Very wide legs may spread beneath the chair; arrange the fabric so you do not step on it when rising.

A patterned top or a particular texture can create the effect you want for the occasion. You do not need prominent shoes, bag and jewellery simultaneously. If the setting is expressly formal, compare the existing combination with that request. A specific question about two options is better than assuming trousers are inherently less suitable.
