Make the table part of the fitting

Sit at a table in the planned combination. Check your sleeves while reaching for a glass and the fabric at the waistband when leaning forward. A long open sleeve may feel pleasant in daily life but fall forward repeatedly while eating. A cuff that closes securely or stays rolled is simpler in that case.

With a dress or skirt, check the seated length and notice whether you must rearrange the fabric before standing each time. If that bothers you, choose another version. There is no obligation to wear a dress to a restaurant; existing trousers with a suitable top can do the same job.

Consider the visible upper half

At the table, the top, neckline and jewellery are especially visible. You can change a simple base through the top instead of replacing the entire combination. Textured fabric, a collar or one colour may provide all the emphasis you want.

Test jewellery for sound and freedom of movement. Several bangles can hit the table when you write or reach. Keep them if you enjoy wearing them; choose another detail if the sound distracts you. Let use guide the decision rather than a general styling rule.

Add the journey there and back

The jacket should work even when you remove it indoors. Avoid relying on a closed outer layer to make the top underneath feel complete. Also check how the jacket sits over a chair back if there is no cloakroom.

Choose shoes for the actual route. A different pair just for the table requires somewhere to change and bag space. A tested pair for the entire evening is often the calmer solution. Lay out the complete combination so you do not discover just before departure that the trouser hem is too long with those shoes.

If the evening begins outdoors

A terrace before dinner can change the clothing choice. Check whether you will sit outside for a while or only wait briefly for the table. An extra layer needs somewhere to go once you move indoors. A very large scarf can occupy more of a narrow chair back than a short jacket.

With a long bag strap, consider whether the bag can sit beside you or at the chair without blocking a route. The exact place is decided at the venue, but size can be assessed beforehand. An outfit is more completely planned when its removed pieces are considered too.
