Decide before packing
Work through manageable groups. Check that garments are clean and completely dry. A stain or missing button will not be resolved by several months in storage. Separate pieces needing care or repair and give them a specific next step rather than mixing them with ready-to-wear clothes.
Try uncertain pieces again if needed. If something remained unused throughout the previous season, note why. Perhaps it only lacked a workable outfit; perhaps you no longer want to wear it. Storage should not automatically postpone every decision until the wardrobe is full again.
Choose suitable containers
Match storage to the material and manufacturer guidance. Delicate garments should not sit beneath heavy shoes or bags. Arrange hard decoration so it does not press against neighbouring fabric. Use clean containers and avoid a location where moisture or strong direct sunlight causes problems.
A large container only helps if you can move and reopen it safely. Pack in understandable groups rather than trying to fill every last gap. Compression is not suitable for every structured or delicate item; establish suitability before leaving clothing tightly compressed for a long period.
Keep the contents identifiable
A short list on the outside can make searching easier: summer trousers, light skirts and two identified dresses, for example. Describe the actual contents rather than writing only “seasonal”. Update the list when removing individual pieces so it does not become an unreliable memory.
Keep clothes useful between seasons easier to reach. A light jumper may work beneath a winter jacket as well as on a cool summer evening. Not every garment needs to enter a fixed seasonal box solely because of its colour.
Check again when reopening
Take clothes out before their first planned use and inspect condition and fit. Allow time for any necessary care according to their labels. Opening a box on the morning of a journey makes every further decision more difficult.
Use the changeover as feedback: which pieces were missed and which remained untouched again? That can make the next storage session smaller and more specific. The aim is an accessible selection for the current season, not the largest possible collection of labelled containers.
