Layers behave differently at a table
A shirt with very wide cuffs can interfere more while eating than while standing. Push the sleeves up and see whether they stay there. Turning back a soft jumper cuff once may be enough; a stiff shirt might need a different fold.
If you tuck a top into trousers, sit down in it. The fabric can move a little, but it should not come completely out every time you stand. A loose front tuck may feel more comfortable than a shirt tightly tucked all around. Decide according to how you actually want to wear it.
Make two versions from one existing combination
Jeans and a plain T-shirt can form a quiet base with a cardigan. If the venue feels a little more formal, try an existing fabric jacket instead. Keep the same shoes initially so you can judge the difference made by the layer.
A dress does not automatically require special shoes. A familiar flat pair may make sense for the journey and a walk afterwards. Test the combination with the actual jacket. A very long coat and a wide dress hem can create more volume than you want to manage at a small table.
Leave room for the afternoon
If a walk follows the meal, a manageable outer layer helps. Choose a bag that fits your phone, keys and possibly a removed layer. A tiny bag that works only in a photograph makes a spontaneous longer outing harder.
You do not need a new combination for every regular meeting. An existing version that felt comfortable can return. A different top or a changed colour combination can add variety without turning the occasion into an obligation to shop.
Compare one concrete example
Lay out straight jeans with a cream T-shirt. Add a blue cardigan first, then a striped shirt as an open layer. The first version shows quieter areas; the second adds lines. Keep shoes and bag unchanged so the comparison remains useful.
If you prefer the shirt buttoned, check the cuffs and waistband again. It then serves as the top and may not need the T-shirt beneath. Decide according to transparency and comfort. A small change in how a garment is worn can make more difference than another accessory that would only need removing during the meal.
